A leading figure of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, Richard G. Hatcher is the subject of the tribute sculpture in the public square of Gary, Indiana. Hatcher made history when he was elected in November 1968—becoming the first African-American mayor of Gary, Indiana, a large U.S. city.
Studio artist Gary Tillery created the life-size bronze sculpture, which stands atop a limestone pedestal in the public square of Gary, near the entrance of the building that houses the office of the current city mayor.
